Robert Leroy Jassey Sr.

Sibley, Iowa Robert Bob Jassey Sr., age 77 of Sibley, IA died Sunday, January 20, 2008 at his home in Sibley, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 24th at First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, IA, with Pastor Terry Simm officiating. Burial will follow at the Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 23rd from 2 " 8 PM, with the family present from 6 " 8 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Robert Leroy Jassey was born April 17, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Richard M. and Leota G. (Parker) Jassey. He attended the Sioux City Community Schools and received his Bachelors Degree from Morningside College in Sioux City. In August of 1948 Robert entered the U.S. Army and served during post WWII near Germany until his honorable discharge in August of 1952 to return home to care for his father, who was dying of cancer. Robert was united in marriage to Cornelia Kleyweg on April 13, 1957 in Sioux City, IA. After their marriage the couple lived in Mapleton, IA for one year, before moving to Sibley, IA where he taught for 38 years at the Sibley Community Schools. He also coached and managed the Sibley Golf Course for 25 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the V.F.W. of Sibley. He enjoyed rose gardening, golfing and sports in general, spending time at the Senior Citizens Center, and collecting coins. He was known as the Candy Man because his pockets were always bulging with candy and whether you gave a smile or needed a smile, the Candy Man always shared with everyone. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cornelia Jassey of Sibley, IA; four children, Rob (and Tami) Jassey of Huntsville, AL, Deborah (and Noel) Roberts of Elk Grove, CA, Lisa Stultz of Orange City, IA, and Rich (and Stacey) Jassey of Maple Grove, MN; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; a brother, Harold Plaaton of Houston, TX, and a sister, Shirley Shirhall of Seattle, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard M. and Leota G. Jassey.
