Helen Honkomp, age 90 of Ashton, IA died Sunday, August 20, 2006 at St. Johns Hospital in Maplewood, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 25, 2006 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Ashton with Fr. Clair Boes, celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery at Ashton, IA. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the St. Marys Catholic Church in Ashton. A Rosary Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Marys Catholic Church. The Walton-Roste Funeral Home of Ashton is in charge of arrangements. Helen Anna (Roetzel) Honkomp was born on March 14, 1916, the daughter of John and Margaret (Sondergruth) Roetzel in Hospers, Iowa. She married Clarence Honkomp on October 17, 1933. The couple farmed near Ashton until Clarences death in 1977. Helen remained on the farm until 2003, when she moved closer to her son and his family in the Twin Cities. Helen was a longtime member of the St. Marys Catholic Church in Ashton. Helen is survived by one son, Roger (wife Rosalie) Honkomp of Roseville, MN and one daughter, Joyce (husband Richard) Niichel of Pueblo West, CO; nine grandchildren: Deanna (husband Mark) Black of New Brighton, MN, Anthony (wife Margaret Peggy ) Honkomp of Mounds View, MN, Terence (wife Katherine) Honkomp of Blaine, MN, Shawn (wife Jolene) Honkomp of Wyoming, MN, James Honkomp of Roseville, MN, Angelee Honkomp of Roseville, MN, Thomas (wife Rosemary) Niichel of Fort Collins, CO, Leah (husband Kevin) Mackey of Avondale, CO; thirteen great-grandchildren and Timothy (wife Barbara) Niichel of Pueblo, CO and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Leonard and Everet Roetzel and five grandchildren: Angela, Andrew, Lilisa and Douglas Honkomp and Susan Niichel.
