Larchwood, IA Richard Dick Thompson, age 80 of Larchwood, IA died Monday, July 16, 2007 at the Avera McKennan Hospice unit in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, July 19th at the Grandview Covenant Church at Larchwood, IA, with Rev. Penny Nance officiating. Burial will follow at the Larchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 " 8 PM with family present from 6 " 8 PM at the Roste Funeral Home of Larchwood. Richard (Dick) Thompson died July 16, 2007 at Avera McKennan Hospice after a brief illness. Dick was born along with his twin brother Robert on August 21, 1926 to Bennie and Clara (Rortvedt) Thompson of Hills, Minnesota. He was raised on the family farm and attended a rural school. He was drafted into the United States Army on January 19, 1945 and in August of that year he was on a troop ship to Japan. He spent his 19th birthday near the island of Leyti. He was among the first occupational forces to land on the mainland of Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped. He was honorably discharged from the Army in October 1946. Dick was united in marriage to Georgiann Schreurs in Larchwood, Iowa on Sept. 25, 1954 and lived in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple built a new home on a farm near Larchwood in 1964 where they farmed together and raised their family. Georgiann died in a car accident on November 1, 1972 ending their marriage of 18 years. Dick continued to farm and also worked at John Morells until he retired after 26 years, in 1987. Grateful and thankful for sharing his life are his daughter, Jan (Marshall) Wohlers of Phoenix, AZ; Allan (Vonda) Thompson on the family farm at Larchwood; Eric (LeAnn) of Sioux Falls, SD. Eight grandchildren, Charlie, Alexandra, Brad, Jeff, Nick, Kristene, Austin and Brianna; one brother, Donald (Judi) Thompson, Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Eleanor Kvaas, Stillwater, MN, and Carol (Richard) Sundem, Sioux Falls, SD; one special Aunt, Irene Ruzick; brother-in-law Arlyn Schreurs of Larchwood, plus a host of nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his wife Georgiann, special friend LaVonne Sorenson; parents Bennie and Clara Thompson; three brothers, Merle, Chester, his twin Robert; one sister Frances Aukes; Georgianns parents, George and Mildred Schreurs; his brother-in-law Myril Schreurs.
