They got off the train in Hull, IA and lived there for a short time before moving to a farm near Lester, IA. She received her education at a country school near Lester. In 1928 her family moved to Steen, MN. As a young lady she worked at several jobs, taking care of new mothers, house cleaning and wallpapering before working at Goemans grocery store. Later, she and her sister Nellie traveled to California to their Aunts house and worked there for a time before returning to Steen. Malena began working at Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, MN and spent over 30 years in the housecleaning department. She lived with her parents and helped them as they grew older and continued living in the house after they passed away. Malenas siblings and their families enjoyed coming to Eibert and Jennies house after church on Sundays for windmill cookies and coffee. The tradition continued even after her parents died in the late 1960s ending only when Malena was not well enough to stay at home any longer. She entered the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills where she had spent so many years serving the needs of other families. Malena passed away this past Monday morning at the age of 100. Her faith was very important to Malena. She spent many years serving as Sunday School Teacher at the Steen Reformed Church. She also enjoyed crocheting and taking bus trips with friends.
