Rock Rapids, IA Alice Goldhorn, age 85 of Rock Rapids, IA died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at Rock Rapids Health Care Centre. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, Feb. 1st at Christian Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Dr. Cliff Hoekstra officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, IA. Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 31st from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Alice (Van Engen) Goldhorn was born on November 3, 1925 on a farm in rural Doon to John and Hattie (Kosters) Van Engen. She grew up a member of the Doon Christian Reformed Church and attended country school. She worked at the Hi-Way Lunch in Rock Rapids, where she met her husband, Alfred. They were married on September 10, 1956 in a private ceremony in her mothers home. They spent most of their married life in Rock Rapids and lived in Palmer, AK while Alfred was employed for DGR. Throughout the years, Alice helped provide for her family by ironing and doing housekeeping for others. Later she was employed by Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in the housekeeping department. She was a member of the Rock Rapids Christian Reformed Church, where she was involved as a Sunday School teacher, Calvinette leader, and attended Martha Circle. She loved to cook, sew, crochet, and later enjoyed flower gardening. She enjoyed traveling, camping, and boating with her family. Upon retirement, Alfred and Alice wintered in Arizona. A highlight in Alices life was being a grandmother. She loved spending time with Amber and Reid and attending their activities. In October of 2007, Alice moved into the Rock Rapids Health Centre where she passed away on Friday, January 28, 2011. Alice is survived by her daughters, Lori Goldhorn, of West Point, NE, and Sheri and her husband Ron Vander Veen of Rock Rapids, IA; grandchildren Amber and Kevin Vanderwal of Harrisburg, SD, and Reid Vander Veen of Rock Rapids, IA; one sister, Geraldine Van Den Brink of Coopersville, MI; brother-in-law Gerrit Oldenkamp of Hull, IA; sister-in-law Gert Van Engen of Luverne, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; parents John and Hattie Van Engen; siblings Henry (Inez) Van Engen, John (Winnie) Van Engen, Suzanne Van Engen, Dick Van Engen, Herman (Henrietta) Van Engen, infant sister Henrietta Van Engen, Henrietta (Herman) Holwerda, Josephine Oldenkamp; nephews Harlan Van Engen and Howard Holwerda, and niece Wilma Neilsen.
