Sibley, Iowa Arthur Art Place, age 78 of Sibley, IA, died Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Country View Manor in Sibley, IA. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 7th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Burial will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 8th at Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton, IA, with military honors by the Iowa Army National Guard. Arthur Ervin Place was born on July 14, 1932, the son of McDonald and Catharine (Marshall) Place in Little Hocking, Ohio. He attended school in Ohio and later graduated from Marietta High School in Marietta, Ohio. Following his graduation he joined the National Guard and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he worked as a sheet metal mechanic. Art then transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the U.S. Army and worked as a maintenance instructor. On March 11, 1967 Art was united in marriage to Erika Pflumm at Tehama, NE. Together they lived various place such as Ft. Eustis, VA, Ft Hood, TX, and Corpus Christi, TX. After 21 years of service Arthur retired and moved to a home in Craig, NE. They lived there until 2001, when they moved to their home in Sibley, IA. Through the years Art enjoyed racing cars and motorcycles, gardening, feeding his birds and squirrels, and spoiling his dogs. He was a member of VFW and Disabled Veterans of America. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Erika Place of Sibley, IA; and a sister, Lucille Fitsimon of Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his parents, McDonald and Catharine Place and sister, Maxine Stepnit.
