Daniel "Oscar" Ray Stevens

Ashton, Iowa Daniel Oscar Stevens, age 64 formerly of Sheldon, Iowa died Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the Sanford Hospital of Canton, SD. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Ashton Bible Church in Ashton, IA, with Reverend Bruce Branson officiating. Burial will follow in the Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Ashton. Daniel Ray Stevens was born on March 16, 1945, the son of Kenneth and Ida (Johnson) Stevens in Sibley, Iowa. On January 13, 1963, he was united in marriage to Melinda Lea Grave at the Ocheyedan Methodist Church. The newly wed couple made their home in Sibley, Sanborn and Hull, IA. They moved to Phoenix, AZ and later moved to Sheldon, IA. In 1970, Oscar worked for Sioux Preme Packing in Sioux Center, IA until 1985 and then worked as a custodian for the Sheldon Community School District. He loved to fish with his friend Glenden and his grandson, Matt. He liked spending time with his three dogs and listening and recording music. Oscar enjoyed family get-togethers and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his four children, Kevin (wife, Lori) Stevens of LeMars, IA, Carla (husband, Jim) Richards of Ashton, IA, Vicki (husband, Mike) Solomon of Madison, GA and Robin Wissink of Inwood, IA; seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Janshen of Rushmore, MN and Dorothy Kates of West Lake Village, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Melinda Stevens; son, Brian Stevens; one brother, Dick Stevens; two sisters, Mavis Duggins and Phyllis Hassebroek; and great-granddaughter, Ella Dake.
