Dorothy Clare Smook was born August 28, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Ivory Thomas and Evangeline Rose (Roque) Colson. She was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in 1948. After graduation she worked two years as a bank teller in Brooklyn. On November 17, 1951 Dorothy married Ike Smook in Brooklyn, NY. They moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Dorothy was a member of the First United & Methodist Church in Doon, and active with various church activities, including church choir, in which she participated for many years. She enjoyed reading, dancing, playing slots, fishing, camping, crossword puzzles and pinochle. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Dorothy loved smiley faces on cards, in her home and on the propane tank in their yard. She welcomed all people with a hug and a kiss, wearing bright red lipstick. Every family member, child or grandchild, received a birthday card on time with a $1 lotto ticket! When visiting Dorothy you could count on chocolate chip cookies, home made bread and a game of pinochle.
