Sibley, IA Leonard N Streit age 87 of Sibley, IA died Friday, April 12, 2013 at Country View Manor Nursing Home in Sibley. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sibley, with Father Tim Hogan as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery at Ashton, IA. Visitation will be Monday, April 15th from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. There will be a Rosary service at 5:30 p.m. and a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Leonard Nicholas Streit was born March 10, 1926, to Anthony B. and Mary (Staudacher) Streit on the farm that his grandfather homesteaded northwest of Ashton. He graduated from Ashton St. Josephs High School in 1943, and farmed for the next 50 years, mostly on the family farm, before retiring in 1994 and moving to Sibley in 2002. On May 18, 1949, he married Luella McGrath at St. Patricks Church in Sheldon. They were married for nearly 64 years and raised a family of five children. Leonard was a devoted husband (he adored Luella), father and grandfather. The family was blessed with nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Leonard was involved in many organizations in the community. He was a member of the Church Council at St. Marys in Ashton for many years, and also served as Eucharistic Minister (one of the first laypersons to do so in the Diocese), lector and officer in the Knights of Columbus. He was on the Board of Directors of the Ashton State Bank, the Osceola Community Hospital and the Ashton Farmers Cooperative Elevator. Beyond his service to the community, Leonard will be remembered most as a kind, gentle and loving man to his wife, family, friends and neighbors. He is survived by his wife, Luella Streit of Sibley; son, Gary (Susan) Streit of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Mary (Noel) Lais of Sioux Falls; son, John (Jenny) Streit of Village of Lakewood, IL; and daughter, Nancy (TR) Franklin of Kansas City, MO; 9 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Stephen) Ham, Andrew (Brooke) Lais, Cory (Matthew) Thompson, Thomas (Faron) Lais, Aaron Lais, Michael Streit, William Streit, Rebecca Lais, Stuart Streit; 3 great-grandchildren, Emma Thompson, Ava Thompson and AJ Lais; brothers, Donald (Marg) Streit of Spirit Lake, IA; Tony (Mary Ann) Streit of Ft. Collins, CO; sisters, Kathleen Richter of Sioux Falls; Betty DeWall of Omaha; and sister-in-law, Barbara Streit of Staceyville, IA. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; son, Craig Streit; brothers, Paul, Robert, James, and sister, Marian Sheforgen. Leonards family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Country View Manor for their kind and loving care and support. In lieu of flowers, family wishes memorials be directed to Osceola Community Hospital and National Parkinson's Foundation South Dakota Chapter.
