Sibley, IA Lavinia McAndrews, age 84 of Sibley, IA died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial service will take place Saturday, June 6th at 2:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley with the Rev. Scott Meyer officiating. Family will receive guests from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley. There will be a private family burial at a later time. LaVinia Pearl (Higgins) McAndrews was born on February 26, 1925, the daughter of John and Maude (Glines) Higgins in Cushing, NE. She was thirteen years old when her mother died. She lived with her older sister for a while, then with various aunts in Omaha, NE. Vinie met and married James A. McAndrews on June 11, 1943 in Logan, IA, while James was home on leave from the service. In their younger years, Vinie and Jim loved to go dancing. She worked at Egg & Poultry for ten years, the Country View Manor as an aide for two years and the Veteran Hospital in Iowa City, IA until her retirement. Vinie then moved to Lincoln, NE with her sister for two years and Co-Owned a Ceramics Shop there. After she had her first heart attack; she moved back to Sibley to be close to other family. Vinie spent many hours volunteering and participating in programs at the Senior Center in Sibley. She was very creative and pursued many hobbies, including needlepoint, crocheting, beading, sewing and ceramics. Throughout her life, Vinie enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping and spending time with her family. Vinie is survived by five children, Sharon Snedden of Ankeny, IA, Sylvin (wife, Donna) McAndrews of Phoenix, AZ, Shirley (husband, Gary) Engelkes of Sibley, IA, Stan (wife, Becky) McAndrews of Ames, IA and Susan (husband, Gary) Jenson of Underwood, IA; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren; four siblings, Delores Chipps of Arizona, Mary Jane Saiz of California, Jack Higgins of St. Paul, NE and Lolamae Trosper of Lincoln, NE; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James in 2002; and two brothers, Leo and Ruel Higgins.
