NOTICE: Rock Rapids, Iowa Carroll Gus Gustafson, age 76 of Rock Rapids, IA died Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15th, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. Dan Kordahl officiating. Private family burial will take place prior to the Memorial Service at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 15th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Carroll John Gus Gustafson was born October 22, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of John D. and Evelyn (Rodine) Gustafson. He was raised on a farm near Albert City, IA and attended the community school. He graduated from Albert City High School in 1953. He continued his education spending two years at Iowa State University and returned home to continue farming. During this time he worked at the Albert City Elevator and attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA where he received his degree in Business Administration in 1959. In 1959 Gus was married to Jean Christian at Newell, Iowa. They lived in Albert City until 1964, when they moved to Rock Rapids, IA. Then Gus was the manager of Farmers Elevator in Rock Rapids, retiring in 1989. After his retirement he ran the Corral Bowling Alley in Rock Rapids for five years. In 1994 Gus and Jean moved to a home in Okoboji, IA. On September 20, 1996 Gus wife Jean, died after 38 years of marriage. In 1998 Gus married Judy Ver Hoef Weins. They retired to a home they built in Rock Rapids in 2001. Gus was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids and also active in various civic and community organizations. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling and doing anything to be outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Judy Gustafson of Rock Rapids, son Scott (Sally) Gustafson of Lincoln, NE their children Ryan, Tyler and Troy, daughter Shelly (Tony) Peterson, their children Nicole and Andrew, all of West Des Moines, IA, daughter Jill (John) Chalstrom, their children Calvin and Eleanor, all of Cherokee, IA, son Matt (Karen) Weins, their children Olivia and Anna, all of Milpitas, CA, brother Norm (Janet) Gustafson of Pleasant Hill, IA, sister Karen (Bob) Hartman of Springfield, MO, sisters-in-law Wilma Miller, Karen (Denton) Olson, Carol Ver Hoef, all of Rock Rapids, and Kay Christian of Sac City, IA and many other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Gustafson, and aunts and uncles. In Lieu of flowers, family wishes memorials be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Lyon County Hospice.
