Rock Rapids, Iowa Carl Folkens, age 82 of Rock Rapids, IA died Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday Sept. 16, 2013 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. Dan Haggar, officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids. Visitation will Sunday Sept. 15th from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 2:00 " 4:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Carl Folkens was born April 22, 1931, in Midland Township northeast of Rock Rapids, IA, the son of John and Elske Alice (Boonstra) Folkens. He attended country school near his familys farm in Midland Township. He was united in marriage to Pearl Pap on May 1, 1951 at her parents home at Rock Rapids. Carl served in Korea in the 6th Armored Division of the U.S. Army from November 20, 1951 until he was honorably discharged on November 17, 1953. While serving his country he achieved the rank of sergeant. When Carl returned home from serving his country he and Pearl started farming at Luverne and later Ellsworth, MN. In 1962, they moved to a family farm near Rock Rapids where they farmed for many years. In 1996, Carl and Pearl moved into Rock Rapids. Along with farming, Carl drove truck and also hauled livestock with his pickup and trailer. Carl enjoyed fishing, playing pinochle, watching NASCAR races and going to Jerrolds farm to spend time with the horses and also participating in wagon trains. Carl died this past Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of eighty-two. Carl is survived by his wife, Pearl of Rock Rapids, their children, Cliff (Barb) Folkens of Rock Rapids; Jerrold (Janelle) Folkens of Rock Rapids; Luann (Gene) Serck of Rock Rapids; Darrel (Chelle) Folkens of Spencer, IA and Jeff (Jody) Folkens of Rock Rapids; sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and brother-in-law, John (Sharon) Pap of Rock Rapids; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Pete and Arend and wife Darlene; one great-grandson, Jack, father and mother in-law, Walter and Effie Pap; and Joann Folkens.
