Hazel Elzenga, age 101 of Rock Rapids, IA died Tuesday, August 08, 2006 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids. Funeral service will be 1:30 PM, Thursday, August 10th at United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids, with Rev. Anita Bane officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA. Visitation will be Thursday, August 10th at 11 AM until the hour of the service at the United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids. Hazel Pals Elzenga was born on July 9th, 1905 in Leaf River, Illinois to Peter and Fannie (Heeren) Pals. The family moved to Twin Brooks, South Dakota when Hazel was one year old, and later moved to Little Rock, Iowa; Ash Creek, Minnesota; and to George, Iowa. Hazel attended country school and helped in the familys home. Hazel was united in marriage to John Elzenga on January 28, 1936 at Little Rock, Iowa. They farmed northwest of George and later moved to a farm near Rock Rapids. They moved to their home in Rock Rapids in 1970. Hazel entered the Rock Rapids Health Centre in May, 2001. Hazel enjoyed working with flowers, baking and following the activities and sporting events of her grandchildren. She attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Lyon County Historical Society. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Elaine (Gene) Mackey of Fonda, IA; her son, Roger (Christine) Elzenga of Windom, MN; her daughter-in-law, Judy Elzenga Nissen of Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, Steve (Nicole) Elzenga and their children, Christina and John, all of Westbrook, MN, Scott (Chris) Elzenga, and their children, Jordan and Justin, all of Blue Earth, MN, Rick (Lynn) Elzenga, and their children, Tylor and Tyson, all of Westbrook, MN, Treye Elzenga of Minneapolis, MN, Tia Elzenga of Bismarck, ND, and Brian (Tracy) Mackey of Omaha, NE; her two sisters-in-law, Nellie Pals of Fulda, MN and Merla Pals of Rock Rapids, IA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, Gordon; granddaughters Jodi and Jana Elzenga Kerr; her sisters, Fannie Kampen, Nellie Jacobs, Hattie Wibben and Irene Boone; and her brothers, Corneal, Clinton, Alvin and Vernon.
