Sibley, IA Viola Dickman, age 88 of Sibley formerly of Melvin, IA died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Country View Manor in Sibley. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 23rd at American Lutheran Church in Melvin. Burial will follow in Baker Township Cemetery at Melvin. Visitation will be Monday with the family present from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin. Viola Luella Dickman was born January 17, 1921, at Melvin, IA, the daughter of George H. and Carrie H. (Frey) Dickman. Viola grew up in the Melvin area where she attended country school. As a young woman she worked for various families as they needed help in their homes with child care and household chores. For many years she worked as a seamstress at Alfs in Sheldon. During her life she also drove school bus for the Melvin school district and also cleaned the church in Melvin. She was a faithful member of the American Lutheran Church in Melvin and was active in the Lutheran Circle for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed going fishing, needle work and crocheting, gardening and tending to her flower gardens along with the weekly card games of pinochle at her home or at her friends homes. A good card game and sharing memories or stories was always enjoyed by Viola. She became a resident of Country View Manor in Sibley in April of 2008. Viola died this past Wednesday, March 18th at Country Manor in Sibley at the age of eighty-eight. She is survived by her family; one niece, Rose Swalve of May City, IA; two great nieces, Shari (Dave) Iverson of Fairmont, MN; and Susan (Don) Hutzel of Hartley, IA; great great niece, Nicole Philiph of Hartley; sister-in-law, Donna Dickman of Logan, IA; and a cousin, Carol Elrod of Atlanta, GA. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, George and Carrie; sisters, Mildred Mohr and Dorothy Dickman; and brother, Arnie Dickman.
