Kathryn "Katie" Hanna

Sibley, Iowa Kathryn "Katie" Hanna, age 82 of Sibley, IA died Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Sibley Nursing & Rehab Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, May 23rd at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sibley, IA, with burial following at St. Andrews Cemetery in Sibley. Visitation will be Sunday, May 22nd from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley. Also there will be a rosary at 5:00 PM and vigil service at 7:30 PM at the funeral home Sunday night. Kathryn Katie Anna (Houwen) Hanna was born May 5, 1929 at Ashton, IA the daughter of Irene (Sluetel) and Herman Houwen. Katie grew up in Ashton where she attended country school and in 1942 her family moved to Sibley where she finished her education, graduating from Sibley High School. On April 23, 1949, Katie was united in marriage to Donald Hanna at Sibley, IA. They made their home in Sibley where they raised their family. Katie worked at the Sibley Egg and Poultry and later was the head of housekeeping at Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center. She was a longtime member of St. Andrews Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters, VFW and the Coffee and Card Club. Katie was a devoted and loving wife, loving mother and grandmother and outgoing friend to others. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, traveling on bus trips, square dancing, camping and watching Survivor. Of all the things she enjoyed the most she loved to spend time with her family and friends. Don and Katie spent many winters in Texas during their retired years. After fifty-seven years of marriage, Don died on April 28, 2006. On May 16, 2011, Katie became a resident at the Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center where she died this past Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the age of eighty-two. She is survived by her children, Debra Goettig of Mt. Pleasant, IA; Patty (husband, Terry) Ferguson of Sioux City, IA; Sandra (husband, John) Smith of Sibley, IA; Dale (wife, Karla) Hanna of Sibley, IA; Donna (husband, Mark) Torkelson of Windom, MN and Barbra (husband, Ritchie) Chieves of Huxley, IA; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; sister, Joyce Tjaden of Sibley, IA and brother, Herman Houwen of Dickens, TX and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Irene; her husband, Donald; son-in-law, Jim Goettig; brother, Frank Houwen and sister, Charlotte Davis.
