Rock Rapids, Iowa Barbara Hubbard, age 89, of Rock Rapids, IA, died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 6th at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Father Jeff Schleisman officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, March 5th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM with the family present 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. There will be a Rosary at 6:45 PM and a Vigil service at 7:00 PM at the funeral home Monday evening. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Lyon County Hospice. Barbara F. Hubbard was born May 15, 1922 in Presho, South Dakota, the daughter of Francis and Viola (Paine) Sweeney. She grew up on an acreage near Presho, SD. When she began high school she moved in with her grandmother in Kennebec, SD, where she graduated from Kennebec High School. Following her graduation she moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she attended and graduated from Nettleton Business College. On November 26, 1942 Barbara was married to Donald Hubbard in Kennebec, SD. The couple moved to Columbia, MO, where Don did basic training and Barbara worked at the University of Missouri in the Sociology Department. The Army Air Corps transferred them to San Antonio, TX where Barbara worked at Frost National Bank. Barbara returned to South Dakota when Don was assigned overseas. After the war they continued to live in Presho until 1956 when they and their four daughters moved to Rock Rapids, IA. On February 11, 2005 Barbaras husband of 62 years died. In May of 2006 she entered the Rock Rapids Health Care Centre where she remained until her death. Barbara was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church in Rock Rapids and was active with the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Catherines Society. She played the piano by ear, was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards with various card clubs through the years and loved spending time with her family. Barbara will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was a beautiful and spirited woman who had an infectious smile and wonderful sense of humor. Left to cherish her memory are her four daughters, Sharon (DeWayne) Glenn of Denver, CO, Mary Phelps of Rochester, MN, Margaret Peggy (Dan) Suter of Eagan, MN and Kathleen (Orin) Huseman of Harrisonville, MO; eight grandchildren, Carmen (Nate) Austin, Rob (Dana) Suter, Alex Phelps, Megan (Jerod) Harbaugh, Michelle (Montie) Springer, Lisa (Matt) Vargo, Derek (Lauren) Huseman, and Travis Huseman; and eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Hamiel of Miller, SD; and several nieces, nephews, extend family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bill Sweeney, one sister, Jean Whitney and great-grandson, Nathan Austin, Jr.
