Agnes Koel - Hulstein

DEATH NOTICE: Rock Rapids, Iowa Agnes Hulstein, age 94 of Rock Rapids, IA died Friday, December 22, 2006 at the Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids. Funeral service will be 1:30 PM, Wednesday, December 27th at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Dan Hagger officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 26th from 2 " 8 PM, with the family present from 6:30 " 8:00 at the Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Agnes Koel-Hulstein was born on September 24, 1912 in Sioux County, Iowa, the daughter of Jake and Riena (Gertsma) Van Gelder. She grew up on farm near Rock Rapids, IA and attended country school. On February 17, 1932 she married John Koel and together they farmed near Rock Rapids for several years. On October 26, 1975 her husband died after 43 years of marriage. Agnes remarried on April 30, 1983 to Gerrit Hulstein, and they continued to live in the Rock Rapids area. On October 8, 2005 her husband Gerrit died after 23 years of marriage. She was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA, active as a Sunday school teacher with the children and adult classes. She was also a member of the Dorcus Society, Senior Citizens and its Golden Age Club. She enjoyed fishing with Fred. She is survived by five children, Don (Cora Lee) Koel of Rock Rapids, IA, Virginia Hobson of Doon, IA, Dee (Earl) Gort of Doon, IA, James (Cheri) Koel of Elkhorn, NE, and Greg (Glenda) Koel of Hills, MN; three step-children, Leona (Gilbert) Vanden Top of Rock Rapids, Ronald (Elaine) Hulstein of Juneau, Alaska and David (Cheryl) Hulstein of Rock Rapids; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; twenty step-grandchildren; forty-two step-great-grandchildren and eight step-great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rena Kornberg of Hartley, IA, Enna Sigler of Vero Beach, FL, and Fenna Klingberg of Fishtail, MT; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Irene; two grandchildren, J. Lancing and Chantel Koel; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Koel; three sisters, Gertrude Hengeveld, Tillie Kellams and Henrietta Ungray.
