Ashton, Iowa Betty Jean Tremmel, age 79 of Ashton, Iowa died Monday, October 20, 2008 at her residence in Ashton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 23, 2008 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Ashton with Fr. John Vakulskas and Fr. Timothy Hogan as celebrants. Burial will follow in the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery at Ashton, IA. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 22nd from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Ashton. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Betty Jean was born in Sheldon, Iowa January 9th, 1929 to Rollie and Bertha (Whitehead) Harnack. She was raised in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School. On September 6, 1949 she was united in marriage to Victor Tremmel at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Sheldon. She and her husband made their home in Ashton. To this union, six children were born. Betty owned and operated Vics Tavern in Ashton for 18 years. She later worked part time at the Leisure Pine Manor. Before retiring in 1989 she was the head checker at the Pamida store in Sheldon. She enjoyed crochet work, knitting and caring for her many house plants. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for 26 years. But mostly Betty enjoyed her family and friends. She is survived by her five children, Tony (Donna) Tremmel of Sioux City, James Tremmel of Ashton, Judy (Marvin) Menage of Sheldon, Mark Tremmel and his special friend Laverna Schmidt both of Okoboji, and Barbara Tremmel of Ashton; six grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; Sister Hazel Clark of Tucson, AZ ,sister-in-law, Clara Jo Harnack of Spirit Lake, IA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 47 years, Victor Tremmel; infant son; brothers, Fred and Ron Harnack; brother-in-law, George Clark; sister-in-law, Catherine Harnack.
