After graduation he remained on the family farm working with his mother and brother Erwin. On December 2, 1953 he was united in marriage to Selma Holthusen at Immanuel Lutheran church in Rock Rapids. To this union two children were born. He and Selma began their lives together farming a mile from where Harley was born and continued farming and raising cattle until his retirement in 1986. Harley continued to farm with his son Chuck until failing health forced his official retirement in 2003. In 2007 he purchased a house and moved into Rock Rapids. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Harley was a director on the Lyon County Rural Electric Coop from November 1978 until March of 1987. During those years, he and Selma had the opportunity to travel to national board meetings in several states which they enjoyed very much. They also enjoyed attending dances with friends and family. He loved to stay active by playing cards, especially pinnacle, being on the Rock Rapids Bowling League, going to bingo in Rock Rapids, Luverne and Canton, and playing pool. He also enjoyed making sure his farm place and lawn were kept up just so. But mostly, Harley loved and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was thrilled to have five grandsons and one little granddaughter. He will be greatly missed. This past Wednesday, Harley passed away at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 88.
