Ashton, IA Marvin Konoby Dilly age 84 of Ashton, IA Saturday, October 14, 2006, at Country View Manor in Sibley, IA. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashton with Rev. Dale Lint, officiating. Burial will follow in Gilman Township Cemetery at Ashton. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8 pm with the family present from 6-8 pm at the Walton-Roste Funeral Home of Ashton. Marvin Konoby Dilly was born January 7, 1922 in Ashton the son of William and Anna (Arends) Dilly. He grew up in Ashton where he attended the public school and graduated from Ashton High School in 1939. Marvin worked for Sharbondy Oil Company until he entered the United States Army on October 8, 1942. He served in the European Theater of Operations in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. While in Europe during WWII, he did tank maintenance and later he helped build the Alaskan Highway. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1945, and returned to Ashton. During his life he worked for the Ashton Produce, Arnie Hein, and the U.S. Postal Service as a substitute clerk, postmaster, and rural mail carrier. He retired in October of 1983. Marvin joined the Ashton Fire Department in October of 1946, and was Fire Chief for more than twenty years followed by his retirement in January of 1990. He also served on the city council for over twenty years and was a past church elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashton. Marvin was known as a great helping hand that never wanted any recognition for his efforts. He was especially gifted at woodworking and shared these talents by helping in the design and construction of the concession stand at the local ballpark and by assisting in the building of his own home in 1977. He spearheaded the building of the new Low Head Damn in Ashton. Marvin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, the William Ben Hoffman American Legion Post 290 of Ashton, and the William F. Allard V.F.W. Post 7373 of Sibley. This past Saturday, October 14, 2006, Marvin died at Country View Manor in Sibley at the age of eighty-four. Marvin is survived by his sister-in-law, Gertrude Dilly of North Mankato, MN; nieces, Lynn Morris of Evanston, IL; Cheryl Jones of Wayzeta, MN; and Gina Dilly of Rochester, MN; nephews, Mark Dilly of Inverness, IL; Scott Frisch of Visalia, CA; and Kent Frisch of Queensland, Australia. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna (Arends) Dilly.
