Larchwood, IA Dorothy Schettler, age 79 of Larchwood, IA died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 2nd at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, IA with Fr. Jeff Schleisman and Deacon Jeff Gallagher celebrating. Burial will follow in the Larchwood Cemetery at Larchwood, IA. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 p.m. at The Church of St. Mary with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Dorothy P. Schettler was born April 14th, 1929 in Alvord Iowa to John Sr. and Alieda (Lens) Scholten. She received her education from the Alvord Country School. Dorothy began working for various families at the age of 14. Among them were the Dr. Lee family of Rock Rapids and the John Tuthill family of Sioux Falls. On April 25th, 1950 she was united in marriage to Francis Schettler at the Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, Iowa. The couple made their home on the family farm near Larchwood where they were blessed with five children. Dorothy was a devoted wife and loving mother. Her husband of 30 years, Francis, passed away in November of 1980 and their son David passed away 2 months later. Dorothy remained on the farm until 1987 at which time she moved into Larchwood. Most recently Dorothy lived at Dow Rummel Assisted Living in Sioux Falls. Playing cards, bowling, gardening, baking, painting, sewing and doing crafts were favorite hobbies that brought her much happiness. Her angel food cakes were a special favorite among family and friends. Dorothy loved her church and felt that giving back by serving was especially important. She served with the St. Marys Altar Society and acted as Circle leader for a time. She was also involved with the Larchwood Womens Legion Auxiliary and was a volunteer at the VA Hospital. Dorothy is survived by four children; Douglas (Helen) Schettler of Harrisburg, Duane (Amy) Schettler of LeMars, Donna (Steve) Hey of Sioux Falls, and Dennis Schettler of Palm Harbor, FL; grandchildren Michelle Schettler, Eric (Marilyn) Schettler, April (Craig) Saufley, Valerie (Nathan) Steinle, Michael Schettler, Andrea Hoogendoorn, Todd Schettler, Bobby Schettler, Rachael Hoogendoorn, Andy, Laura, and Alex Hey; five sisters, Ann (Ray) Burkard, Irene (Joe) Soldatke, Mary Kearney, Veronica (Richard) Tuschen, and Rose (Dale) Carman; four Scholten brothers, George (Donna), John Jr. (Dorothy), Cletus (Shirley) and Lawrence (Sandy); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Sr. and Alieda Scholten; her husband of 30 years Francis Schettler; her son David; her siblings Baby Scholten, Joseph Edward Scholten, Paul Scholten, Betty Wall, Ray Scholten, Theresa Schettler and Joe Scholten.
