Sibley, Iowa Donald J. Soderquist age 92 of Sibley, IA died Sunday, July 8, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 12th at First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, IA, with Reverend Terry Simm officiating. Burial will take place prior to the service and family and friends are invited to gather at the Jurrens Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday to leave in procession to the Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley. Military honors will be presented by the George E. Mudge American Legion Post 324 and the William F. Allard VFW Post 7373. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 11th from 2-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley. Donald Joseph Soderquist was born on a farm near Cannon Falls, MN on November 6, 1919, the son of Anton F. and Esther (Moline) Soderquist. He was a graduate of Hastings High School, Hastings, MN. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, rising to the rank of First Sergeant. Don married Sheila L. Kyle on February 11, 1943 and to this union four children were born: Lynn, Leslie, Gayle and Paul. Don was engaged in a number of businesses over the years including owner of Soderquist Our Own Hardware in Sibley. Don was an ordained Presbyterian Elder and was active in his church, First Presbyterian Church of Sibley. He was active in VFW Post 7373 and American Legion Post 324, serving as chaplain of both posts. He was a life member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. He held leadership positions in the Masons and the Order of Eastern Star. He will be greatly missed. Don is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Sheila Soderquist of Sibley; four children, Lynn (Harold) Schram of Sibley, Leslie Duin of Sibley, Gayle (Larry) Jacobsma of Sibley and Paul (Gail) Soderquist of Chandler, AZ; ten grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
