Ashton, Iowa Marcella Honkomp, age 89 formerly of Ashton, IA died Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 2nd at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Ashton, with Reverend Dale Lint officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery of Ashton. Visitation will be Sunday, November 1st from 2:00 " 5:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Ashton. Marcella Jane (Sally) Honkomp was born in Osceola County on June 12, 1920 to John and Jennie (Schmidt) Groen. She attended Country School Gilman #9, through eighth grade. After 8th grade Sally did homecare services for Mrs. Henry Ahrends of Ashton and later for her aunt, Minnie Schmidt. During WWII Sally and her sister Virginia (Polly) Prigel worked in an air arsenal in Vallejo, California. Sally married Leonard Honkomp of Ashton while he was stationed in Tennessee. After the war Sally and Leonard moved back to Ashton to farm the family farm. They built a home in Ashton and raised their 3 children. Leonard passed away in January, 2006. Sallys hobbies included gardening and taking care of her home. She also worked at the Cedar Cabin during the 1970s and 1980s. Sally is survived by her daughters; Linda Gilliland of Coos Bay, OR and Cindy DeLong of Rapid City, SD, and son, Ronald Honkomp of Ashton; granddaughters, Sabrina Johnston of Rapid City, SD, and Misty Wolf of Estherville, IA; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Preston, Marshall and Jaxon; sister, Shirley Letner of Sheldon, IA; and brother, Dale Groen of Pembrooke Pines, FL. Preceding Sally in death were her husband, Leonard; daughter-in-law, Beth Honkomp; brothers, George, Jack, Edwin, Don, and in infancy, brothers, Jim and Robert Groen; sisters, Marge (Leo) Seivert, Virginia (Ernest) Prigel, Irene Raun, and Betty (George) Martens.
