Richard H. Babl, 72, formerly of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Miami, Fla., died in Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 10, 2012, from complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Services will be held at a later date. He was born in Rock Rapids on April 5, 1940, to Leo & Leona Babl and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1958. He graduated with a BA in Mass Communications and Journalism from the University of Iowa and began his career working in radio/television. Babls successful career in PR, marketing, and writing included 10 years as Director of Communications for Miami International Airport and Associate Director of Public Relations for the University of Florida. He worked for clients in the airline, cruise, and rail industries, including the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of Homestead, and many South Dade County firms. Babl was also past president of the South Florida chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, and held leadership and advisory positions in various south Florida civic and industry groups. He also lived briefly in Marysville, WA, and Carpinteria, CA. Rich was preceded in death by his parents, Leo & Leona Babl, and his brothers Wally and Bob. He is survived by his sister Mary Rose Hindt of Rock Rapids and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating his life is being planned by the family for a later date. Announcements will be made when plans are finalized.
