Beaver Creek, MN Dick Doorneweerd, age 84 of Beaver Creek, MN, died Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN. Services will be held on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Lester, IA. Burial will take place following the service at the Beaver Creek Cemetery in Beaver Creek, MN. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday May 8th with family present at the Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall in Lester, IA. Dick Doorneweerd was born December 29, 1923 to Johannas and Dirkje (Dorothy Oostendorp) Doorneweerd in Lyon County Iowa. He grew up helping on the family farm and attended country school near Lester, Iowa. Dick married Leah Pauline Wulf on December 7, 1945 in Rock Rapids, Iowa. The couple farmed in Lyon County IA, rural Valley Springs, SD and Rock County, MN. He also worked construction over the years until his retirement in 1995. Dick and Leah moved into Beaver Creek in 1997. His family will remember him as a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to see his family come to visit. His grandchildren will remember him as a grandpa who had a fun sense of humor. He would tease and have fun with them for hours. Dicks grandkids were the spark in his eye and they will remember fondly, their Pappa D. As a young man Dick became interested in flying. His interest led him to get his pilots license and even buy a plane with another person. His most interesting flight must have been when he was flying low looking for stolen calves. He hit an air pocket that caused him to crash into a grove of trees. Dick was a farmer through and through. If he wasnt in the field himself, he was driving around in his white pick-up to see how the crops were coming. He enjoyed attending auctions in the area as well as catching up with the men at the barbershop in Hills. This past Tuesday, May 6th, Dick died at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN. He will be greatly missed. Greatful for having shared his life are his wife, Leah of Beaver Creek, MN and five children. Allen (Kathy) Doorneweerd of Las Vegas, NV, Doris (Dan) Banks of Colorado Springs, CO, Mary (Lyle) Claussen of Brookings, SD, Lila (Rick) Tatge of Beaver Creek, MN and Kim Messner of Winthrop, MN; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alyce Nelson of Luverne, MN, Jeannette Mouw of Hull, IA and Dorothy (Lloyd) DeRoo of Brooten, MN. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe Doorneweerd; and son-in-law, Joe Messner.
