NOTICE: George, Iowa Alfred VanBriesen, age 92 of George, IA died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7th, 2011 at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church of George with Rev. Paul Fischer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 6th from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Alfred Van Briesen was born April 14, 1919 in rural Lyon County, IA to Henry and Maggie (Dirks) Van Briesen. He was raised and educated in Lyon County. In 1942 Alfred was united in marriage to Lois Lucille Prentice in Abilene, TX. To this union two children were born, Larry and Janet. Later that same year Alfred left for his tour of duty with the United States Army. He served in the European Theatre in WWII and fought in several large campaigns including the assault on Omaha Beach, Falaise, The Battle of the Buldge, The Siegfried Line and The Battle for the Rhine. Upon his return from the war Alfred began his long career farming in the Rock Rapids area. He enjoyed fishing and doing all of his own carpentry work. He was affiliated with the VFW and American Legion. Alfred was a member of the Lyon County First Presbyterian Church of George. This past Sunday, October 2, 2011, Alfred passed away at the age of 92. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his son, Larry (LeAnn) Van Briesen of Holiday Island, AR; daughter, Janet Burma and her son Cory Burma of College Station, TX; sister, Pearl DeBooy of Rock Rapids, IA; brothers, Harry Van Briesen of Rock Rapids, IA, and Frank Van Briesen of Bellview, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lois; sisters, Hattie Garmeister and Mary Hinrichs; brothers, Henry and Ben.
