Rock Rapids, Iowa Lorie Etta Thompson, age 91 of Rock Rapids, IA died on Thursday, December 05, 2013 at the Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA. A memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Monday, December 9th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Dan Kordahl officiating. A private family burial will be prior to service at Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Sunday, December 8th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Also there will be a VFW Auxiliary service at 7:00 PM. Lorie Etta Thompson was born August 1, 1922, on a farm near Hull, Iowa, the daughter of John and Emma (Lutjens) Tiedeman. She attended country school until her family moved to Rock Rapids, graduating from Rock Rapids High School in 1939 at the age of fifteen. She continued her education at Samuel Beauty College in Sioux City, Iowa, and then returned to Rock Rapids, where she owned and operated the Cozy Beauty Salon. Lorie Etta married Arnold C. Olson on May 10, 1945. Together they lived on a farm south of Rock Rapids. To this union five children were born. They farmed until 1977. When Arnolds health began to fail, they moved to Rock Rapids. On April 12, 1982, Arnold died after thirty-seven years of marriage. On December 28, 1991, Lorie Etta married Thealburn Tal Thompson. They made their home in Rock Rapids and also spent much of their time at their home on Lake Okoboji. Tal died in 2004, after thirteen years of marriage. Lorie Etta was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, VFW Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking, traveling, and was an avid sports fan. Most of all she enjoyed time with family and friends. Spending her 85th birthday at the Minnesota Twins baseball game in Minneapolis was a favorite memory. Throughout her life, Lorie Etta continued to remain busy with church and community activities. She was very thankful for her health and for having the ability to reach out to others in the community. This past Thursday, December 5, 2013, Lorie Etta died unexpectedly at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, at the age of 91. Left to cherish her memory are four children: Denton (Karen) Olson of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Karen LeMonds of Doon, Iowa; Russell (Robyn) Olson of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Orlynn Olson (fiance Donna Friday) of Louisville, Nebraska. Also surviving are son-in-law Doug Wiarda of Rock Rapids, Iowa; seven step-children; nine grandchildren: Chad Wiarda, Adam Wiarda, Trent Fuoss, Krista Andrews, Troy Fuoss, Doug LeMonds, Anna Olson-Mandel, Chris Olson, and Nick Olson; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy McCormack of Rock Rapids, Iowa; and many step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other extended family. Lorie Etta was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma Tiedeman; husband, Arnold Olson; an infant son; husband, Thealburn Tal Thompson; daughter, Karla Wiarda; four brothers, Berend, Walter, Ferdinand and Hubert; and one sister, Bertha Anderson.
