Sibley, IA James "Jim" Bergman age 85 of Sibley, IA died Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Sibley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sibley, IA. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5th at United Methodist Church in Sibley with Pastor Tim Nappe of the Faith Lutheran Church officiating. A luncheon will be served immediately after the funeral service. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery at Harris, IA. Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 4th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. James Wendell Bergman was born April 2, 1928, at Harris, Iowa, the son of John Albert Bergman and Tena (Miller) Bergman. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Harris, IA. He attended Harris Consolidated Schools, and graduated in 1946. Jim attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Agriculture. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving his country in the United States Army from 1951 " 1953. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he returned home to Harris and began farming the family farm northeast of Harris. He was united in marriage to Matilda Kruger of Harris on September 26, 1954. To this union, they were blessed with six children: Bobbi, Bill, Lynn, Tina, Jenny and Betsy. In 1962, Jim joined the ASCS as the county executive director and retired after 30 years of service, all while still farming in Harris. In 1971, they moved from the farm by Harris to their home in Sibley. Jim was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and he served on the Osceola Veterans Affairs board. Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Jim enjoyed woodworking and building fine furniture for his family. He is survived by his wife, Matilda "Matt" Bergman of Sibley; five daughters, Bobbi (LeRoy) Swedlund of Omaha; Lynn (Greg) Echter of Omaha; Kristina Horn of Lincoln; Jennifer (Bob) Renken of Omaha and Betsy Bergman of Lincoln; nine granddaughters and three grandsons. James was preceded in death by his parents, John and Tena; his son, Bill Bergman and two brothers, Irvin and Cecil Bergman.
