Verlyn Bos, age 72 of Hills, MN, died unexpectedly, Thursday, July 9, 2009 at his home in rural Hills, MN. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, July 13th at The Reformed Church of Steen in Steen, MN, with Rev. Dan Kuik officiating. Burial will follow at Eastside Cemetery near Steen, MN. Visitation will be Sunday, July 12th from 1:00 to 6:00 PM, with the family present from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Hills. Verlyn Dale Bos was born January 4, 1937 during a snowstorm on a farm northwest of Hills, Minnesota, the son of Joe W. and Jennie (Vis) Bos. He attended the Hills Public Schools and as a teenager worked for area farmers, as well as his familys farm. He also worked for A.R. Woods Manufacturing in Luverne, MN. On September 5, 1958 Verlyn was united in marriage to Henrietta Van Wyhe at Steen Reformed Church in Steen, MN. They lived in Luverne before moving to a farm near Beaver Creek, MN in March of 1959. In December of 1965 they moved to their present day farm southeast of Hills, MN. Side by side with his loving and caring wife Henrietta, Verlyn raised a family, milked cows and farmed all of his life. He also hauled livestock for his brother for a short time. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and a board member for the Hills Coop Farm Service. He was a member of the Steen Reformed Church in Steen. He loved his animals, especially his Dalmatian dog, Daisy . His biggest passion was working with horses, teaching all his children and grandchildren everything he knew. He often told his children, If you fall off, you better get back on . Verlyn and his family and friends enjoyed trail ride trips to the Black Hills and he especially enjoyed their annual family horseback riding day. He will be remembered as a good man with a strong work ethic, who was always there when others needed help. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Henrietta Bos of Hills, MN; six children, Doug (Lynette Stensland) Bos of Luverne, MN, Vicki Bos of Steen, MN, Brad (Barb) Bos of Steen, MN, Brenda (Selden) Lacey of Valley Springs, SD, Ron (Noreen) Bos of Hills, MN and Ken (Tammy) Bos of Hills, MN; fifteen grandchildren; a brother, Lyle (Dorothy) Bos of Hills, MN; a sister-in-law, Joanne Bos of Sioux Falls; a brother-in-law, Harold (Toni) Van Wyhe of Luverne, MN; three sisters-in-law, Berniece (Noralf) Barstad of Luverne, MN, Cordean (John) Top of Springfield, MO and Alvina (Jerry) Weeda of Sioux Falls, SD; and many other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe W. and Jennie Bos; brother, Maynard Bos; sister-in-law, Tina Hoff-Zylstra; and two brothers-in-law, Bernie Hoff and Butch Jansma.
