Margaret Kyle

Rock Rapids, Iowa Margaret Kyle, age 79, of Rock Rapids Iowa, died Wednesday January 2, 2008 at Lyon Manor Nursing Home in Rock Rapids. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Monday, Jan. 7th at the United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids, with Rev. Dean Shelly officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 6th from 2 " 8 PM with the family present from 6 " 8 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Margaret Kyle was born March 2, 1928 to Tom and Edna (Lage) Harries in Sutherland, IA. She graduated from the Paullina school system and went on to graduate from the Northern Iowa Teachers College with a teaching degree. That school is now known as UNI, The University of Northern Iowa. On June 6, 1954 Margaret was united in marriage to Loran Kyle in Sutherland, IA. To this union two children were born. Margaret worked in the Central Lyon school system her entire career until her retirement in 1990. She enjoyed spending time with friends in the community. She belonged to the Eastern Star Society, played bridge on a regular basis and was a very good golfer. She won the Rock Rapids womens city tournament in the 1950s along with experiencing the thrill of a hole-in-one during her years of golfing. She and her husband played on the couples league in Rock Rapids and she was involved with 4-H and the ISU County Extension. Margaret taught fourth grade for a number of years before accepting the position as Home Ec teacher. Many members of the community will fondly remember her from their school days. She loved to shop, especially for shoes. She enjoyed sewing, was a wonderful cook and was quite adventurous. Margaret loved to travel with her husband, especially arranging their trips to attend grandchildrens events. Her grandkids will never forget the times she rode an elephant and a camel with them as part of a family outing. She was not known to be timid. Margaret enjoyed traveling with her husband to military reunions. They kindled old friendships and made new ones as they traveled to places such as Texas, California, Chicago, and Virginia. The couple always seemed to be doing something or going somewhere. They were hard to catch at home and they spent fifty two wonderful years together. This past Wednesday, Margaret died at the Lyon Manor Nursing Home in Rock Rapids. Margaret is survived by two children: Patti (husband Bill) Scholten of Sioux Falls, SD and Tom (wife Karla) Kyle of Lake Park, IA; four grandchildren: Matt and Alex Scholten of Sioux Falls and Nathan and Jordan Kyle of Lake Park. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Loran Kyle and one sister, Kathryn Harries. Memorials can be directed to the Sanford Hospice of Lyon County.
