Rock Rapids, IA Elsie Hass, age 98 of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, April 21, 2008 at Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids. Memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Friday, April 25th at the First United Methodist Church in Doon, IA, with Rev. Steve Swenson officiating. Burial will be prior to the service on Friday at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, with the family gathering at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids and preceding to Riverview Cemetery for a 10:00 AM burial. Visitation will be Thursday, April 24th from 2 " 8 PM, with the family present from 6 " 8 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Elsie Celia Hass was born January 12, 1910 in Hartley, Iowa, the daughter of August and Louisa (Guenther) Mast. She was raised in Primghar, IA and attended Primghar High School. On July 6, 1927 Elsie was united in marriage to Elmer Hass in South Sioux City, NE. Elsie and Elmer were blessed with three children, Lila, Norman Buzz and Jodene. Together they lived and farmed for two years near Washta, IA, and thirty-five years near Doon, IA. They retired from farming in 1964 and moved to Rock Rapids, IA. On January 2, 1971 Elsies husband, Elmer died after forty-three years of marriage. Elsie enjoyed playing cards, gardening, cooking and traveling. She also spent her spare time playing piano and the ukulele, both of which she played by ear. She also enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, formerly known as First Congregational Church, in Doon, IA. She was active over the years, serving on the Lyon County Extension Council, 4-H Leader, chaperone for the Doon Girls Basketball Team, a volunteer at Dinner Date for fifteen years, and other community activities. In November of 2005 Elsie entered Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA where she remained until this past Monday, April 21, 2008, where she died at the age of 98. She is survived by her three children, Lila (Cornie) Brower, Norman Buzz (Marilyn) Hass, both of Rock Rapids, IA and Jodene (Chuck) Hanson of Sioux City, IA; six grandchildren, Jeff (Mary) Brower of Spokane, WA, Joni (Jay) Brooks of Clemson, SC, Jan (Bruce) Vogel of Rock Rapids, IA, Jerilynn (Wally) Walker of Brooklyn Park, MN, James (Janine) Hass of Sioux Falls, SD and Jon Hanson of Sioux City, IA; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Hass; four sisters, Clara Sanders, Sadie Breyfogle, Linda Hopkins and Dorothy Karekel; three brothers, Charles, Elmer and Frank Mast; and one great-grandchild.
