George, IA Darlyne Mahler age, 91 of George, IA died Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in George, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in George, with Rev. Scott Burdsall, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Darlyne Mahler was born January 24, 1917, to John and Bertha (Kopplin) Block in DeSmet, SD. She and her family moved to George, Iowa when she was in 7th grade. She was the last surviving witness to a bank robbery that took place in Little Rock which occurred when she was a young girl. She and others were locked in the vault as the bandits made off with their loot. Darlyne even testified at the trial and helped to bring the two men to justice. She graduated from George High School. On December 10, 1934, Darlyne was united in marriage to Henry Mahler in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home for most of their lives in George, with a few years spent in Little Rock, IA. Darlyne worked as a telephone operator in George as well as Little Rock. She also was the bookkeeper at the Bruns Chevrolet dealer in George for several years. Later she worked as Assistant to the Administrator of the Good Samaritan Center in George IA until her retirement in 1982. She continued to spend many hours at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home but in another capacity, as a loyal volunteer. She gave her help and her love to the residents for many years. It was at the end of Darlynes life that the staff and residents had a chance to give back and take care of her. Darlyne was an active member of her church serving as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the womens bible study for many years. Henry passed away in July of 1974, ending their marriage of 39 years. The couple was blessed with two children, seven grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Darlyne loved her kids very much. She was wonderful with her hands and loved to make crafts. All of her grandkids and many great-grandkids have things that she made especially for them. Her family will remember her as a spunky lady with a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed fishing, sewing, watching baseball and helping others. She was dearly loved by many and will be greatly missed. Darlyne is survived by daughter, Gwen (Gene) Peters of Little Rock, IA; seven grandchildren, Kevin (Kelly) Peters of Pennington, NJ, Kirk (Barb) Peters, Kyle (Cheryl) Peters, and Kent (Julie) Peters, all of Little Rock, IA, Gina (Lee) Glasoe of Sioux Falls, SD, Lori (Andrew) Osterberg of Englewood, CO, and Kristie Mahler of Lakewood, CO; daughter-in-law, Jan Mahler of Aurora, CO; twenty great-grandchildren; sister Jacque Linn of Eagen, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Darlyne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Henry Mahler; son Paul Mahler; and sister Bertha Mae Block.
