Doon, IA Ike Smook, age 83 of Doon, IA, died Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday, November 15th at the United Methodist Church in Doon, with Reverend Steven Swenson officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Doon. Visitation will be Sunday, November 14th from 2:00 to 6:00 PM with the family present from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA. Memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church in Doon, IA. Ike Meester Smook was born on March 11, 1927, the son of Johannes and Wilhelmina Minnie (Meester) Smook in Rock Rapids, IA. He grew up and attended country school in the Rock Rapids area. Ike enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 15, 1945 and was honorably discharge on July 11, 1946, with rank of Seaman First Class. On November 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Colson in Brooklyn, New York and were later divorced. Ike worked as a self employed plumber. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Rock River American Legion Post #476 of Doon. His hobbies and interests included Stock Car Racing in Sioux Falls and Rock Rapids, bowling, camping, woodworking and antique cars. Ike was a practical joker and posed numerous times for the Doon Press and disguised himself as The Mountain Man and Ike Van Smokendorp the inventor of the electric corn cob. Ike is survived by five children, Chris (Wayne) Ranschau of Doon, IA, Doug (Joy) Smook of Sioux Falls, SD, Terri (Duane) Dykstra of Rock Valley, IA, Michael Lange of Pittsburg, CA and Patricia (Ed) Walkup of Yuma, AZ; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johannes and Minnie Smook; son, Kevin Smook; sister, Adeline Broesder and brother, Robert Smook.
