Sibley, IA Donald Brody, age 90 of Bigelow, MN died Friday July, 27, 2012 at his farm northeast of Sibley, IA. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Friday, August 3rd at the United Methodist Church in Sibley, IA, with Pastor Shannon Pascual officiating. Private burial for family will take place prior to the service in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan, IA. Visitation will be Thursday, August 2nd from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Donald Brody was born April 17, 1922 and was the son of Gordon and Clara (Moar) Brody. He grew up on a farm near Ocheyedan and attended country school. He graduated from Sibley High School in 1941. After graduating he helped his father on the farm and then in November of 1942 enlisted in the United States Army. At the end of his basic training he was allowed to go home on furlough and on June 16, 1943 he married Maxine Creech. After additional military training he was sent to serve in the World War II battle of Leyte in the Philippines and later served in Okinawa. He was classified a Staff Sargent and after 38 months of service he received his honorable discharge in December of 1945 and returned home to wife Max and daughter Donna. They farmed near Cloverdale, IA for two years and then moved to a farm just off Highway 59, north of Allendorf, IA. Don also drove a truck transporting livestock and shelled corn for area farmers. On December 3, 2011, Dons wife Max passed away. They were married for 68 ½ years. Don remained living on their family farm until his death. Donald was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sibley, IA. He was a charter member of the Sibley F.F.A. He loved to go fishing - especially for Walleye. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling and watching the Minnesota Twins. He was on a bowling league from the time the Sibley bowling alley opened until January 2012 when he broke his ankle. In April of 2010 Don went on his Honor Flight to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. In April of 2012 Don and his family celebrated his 90th birthday. Don greatly enjoyed being with his family and they will always remember him as a wonderful & loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Don is survived by his son, Dale Brody (wife Lavonne) of Blue Springs, MO; three daughters, Donna Batye of Kansas City, MO, Diane Duggan (husband John) of Kansas City, MO and Nancy Henderson of Plymouth, MN; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Bobbi (and husband Dennis) Truckenmiller of Sibley, IA; sister-in-law, Carol Creech of Alexandria, VA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Clara Brody; wife Maxine; son Craig; brother Gerald; and sisters Darlene Alexander (and husband Ray); and Joycelyn Deaver (and husband Leonard).
