He was raised in the Little Rock area and graduated from Little Rock High School. Duane joined the military and served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. Prior to his leaving for the military, Duane was united in marriage on March 24, 1955 to Carol Boekhout at the parsonage of the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock. To this union two children were born. Duane spent his working life making a living with his hands. He worked for Stewart Construction in all facets of building including masonry. He was especially proud of several stone fireplaces he had built. Duane retired from the building trades after 40 years, in 1996. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock since 1948 and served as Trustee for the church for a time. Over the years, he also served on the City Council and Fire Department for Little Rock. Even after his retirement Duane still enjoyed tinkering in his garage with different projects and tending to his garden. He loved to visit and play pinochle with his friends and rarely missed coffee time in the morning downtown. He enjoyed music very much and loved to listen to the Country Wax Museum program on the Luverne radio channel. In their younger years, he and Carol often went to dances in the area and their children Vicki and Terry will undoubtedly smile when they remember that on more than one occasion they saw their mother and dad dance in the kitchen when the mood struck them just right. Duane and Carol also took the time to travel later in life. They went to Branson several times and to Nashville, TN as well as the Black Hills. All while enjoying the company of their good friends Lyle and Jo Gerken. Duane loved his family very much, especially his grandkids. Theyll remember his smile and teasing as well as his sternness, and they will never have to doubt that he loved them. This past Saturday, Duane passed away at the Osceola Community Hospital at the age of 77. He will be greatly missed.
