DEATH NOTICE: SIBLEY, IOWA Catherine Flanagan, age 89 of Sibley, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006 at her home in Sibley. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, December 21, 2006 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sibley, with Father Clair L. Boes officiating. Burial will follow the lunch in the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery of Rock Valley, IA. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 20th, from 2 until 8:00 PM with the family present from 5 " 8 PM at the Walton-Roste Funeral Home of Sibley. There will be a Rosary Service at 5:00 PM and a Vigil Service at 7:00 PM. Catherine Sylvia Flanagan was born on November 17, 1917, the daughter of Nicholas and Susan (Leibrich) Hanten. She grew up and graduated from White Lake High School in White Lake, SD and then later attended Nettleton Business College. On February 16, 1942, Catherine was united in marriage to Earl Flanagan in Plankinton, SD. The couple farmed near Rock Rapids from 1942 to 1960, then moved to Rock Valley and lived there from 1960 until 1981. They moved to Wesley, IA in 1981, and then moved back to Rock Rapids in 1988. In 1993, Catherine and her husband moved to Sibley. Catherine worked from Kooima Machine Works for a number of years when they lived in Rock Valley. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sibley. She enjoyed playing cards, listening to books on tape, playing golf and pretty much all sports. Catherine is survived by her seven children: Earl (wife Mary Anne) Flanagan of Merkelbeek, Holland, Clare (husband Bill) Sturm of Neenah, WI, Robert (wife Judi) Flanagan of Fairfax Station, VA, Jerry (wife Carol) Flanagan of Sioux Falls, SD, Margaret (husband Jim) Johanning of Alexandria, VA, Thomas Flanagan of Mainz, Germany and Darlene (husband Mike) Meier of Carlisle, PA; eighteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; five siblings: Irene Ryan of Kimball, SD, Oliver Hanten of White Lake, SD, Loyola Myers of Avon, SD, Theresa Fraudseu of Platte, SD and Susan Kerrick of Eugene, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1996; five brothers: Leonard, Edmund, Anthony, Nick and Richard Hanten; and one sister, Anastasia Hanten.
