Doon, IA Arlen Steenhoven, age 69 of Doon, IA died unexpectedly Monday June 1, 2009 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, June 3rd at the First Reformed Church in Doon, with Rev. Donald Baker officiating. Burial will follow at the Sheridan Township Cemetery in Boyden, IA. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 2nd from 2:00 " 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, IA. Arlen LeRoy Steenhoven was born on July 9, 1939, the son of Arie and Alice (Pollema) Steenhoven in Boyden, Iowa. He grew up in Boyden and graduated in 1956 from Hospers High School in Hospers, Iowa. On March 20, 1959, he married Kathleen Mohlenkamp at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa. The couple moved to a farm near Doon, Iowa, where they had a Dairy Farm for forty-five years and then moved into Doon in 2004. Arlen then worked part time for the Farmers Elevator of Doon. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Doon. He loved to fish and many people joked about them never being home. Arlen and his wife enjoyed wintering in Arizona and traveling to other places throughout the years. Arlen made a point of following his grandchildrens activities and especially enjoyed spending time visiting his family and friends. A recent special memory Kathleen and her family will always cherish will be the 50th Anniversary celebration they had this past March 20, 2009. Arlen is survived by his wife of fifty years, Kathleen Kathy Steenhoven of Doon; one son, Joel (wife, Lori) Steenhoven and their children Lindsay and Ben all of Sioux City, IA; daughter-in-law, Denise Steenhoven of Rock Rapids, IA and her children Natalie Steenhoven of Calgary, Alberta and Jesse Steenhoven of Rock Rapids; three siblings, Steve (wife, Lynette) Steenhoven, Wayne (wife, Luci) Steenhoven and Alethea (husband, Jack) Stubbe all of George, IA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arie and Alice Steenhoven and son, Jim Steenhoven in February of 2008.
