George, IA Andrew Voss, age 102 of George, IA died Friday, April 19, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society of George, IA. Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23rd at Tabernacle Baptist Church with Pastor Bryan Anderson and Pastor Oryn Meinerts officiating. Burial will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, family and friends are asked to gather at the Tabernacle Baptist Church at 12:30 p.m. Visitation will be Monday, April 22nd from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in George. Andrew Voss was born March 30, 1911, in Simonswolde, Ostfriesland, Germany the son of Klaas and Rixte (Bauer) Voss. He attended the local elementary school and started agricultural school in Aurich. In 1930 he immigrated alone from Germany by ship - an eleven day trip. From New York, he traveled by train to George where his cousins met him. He possessed a strong work ethic and was hired for various agricultural jobs in North and South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. On December 2, 1936, he was united in marriage to Freda Husmann. He became a United States citizen in 1937. After farming for three years near Rushmore, Minnesota, they moved to a farm between Rock Rapids and George, Iowa, where Andrew farmed until 1977. Andrew and Freda then lived in Prescott Valley, Arizona, where Freda passed away in 1983. The following year Andrew returned to live on his farm until 2000, when he moved to a home in George. He has resided at the Good Samaritan Society in George since December of 2011. Andrew faithfully loved and served his Lord, and was an active member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. He has a special interest in missionary endeavors around the world. His favorite scripture was Psalm 23, and his favorite hymn was Day by Day. He also had a love for organ music and played various instruments during his life, including organ, accordion, trumpet and harmonica. One of Andrews favorite hobbies included gardening. He is survived by his son Richard (Jane) Voss ; daughters, Janie Voss; Mabel (Larry) Tieszen; and Freda (John) Rasko ; daughter-in-law, Ruth Voss; 16 grandchildren; LaVeryl (Maxine) Voss, Doyle (Barbara) Voss, Karen (John) Rust, Ivan (Angela) Voss, Kimberley (Michael) Medlin, Andrea (Jacob) Dixon, Nadine (Spencer) Perkins, Zandra (Gregory) Wagner, Kay Voss, Eric Voss, Paul (Theresa) Tieszen, Michelle (Robin) Erkkila, Mark (Rhonda) Tieszen, Marissa (Bracken) Rustad, Cameo (Saye) Kolonight and Spencer Rasko; 46 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Foelke Voss. Andrew was preceded in death by his wife, Freda; son, Klaas; parents, Klaas and Rixte Voss; brothers, Hinderk and Uffe Voss; sister, Frucken Dirks; grandson, Donald Voss; and great-grandson, Derek Voss. In lieu of flowers, gifts and memorials may be designated to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Missions Fund, George, Iowa. Jurrens Funeral Home of George is in charge of services.
