Janice Smith

Inwood, IA Janice Smith age 71 of Inwood, IA formerly of George, IA died Sunday, February 19, 2012 at the Fellowship Village Nursing Home at Inwood, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Thursday, February 23rd at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George with Rev. David Vander Laan, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George. Visitation will be will be Wednesday, Feb. 22nd from 2:00 " 8:00 PM with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George. Janice Smith was born October 21, 1940 in Boyden, IA to Evert and Cornelia (Korthals) Van Westen. She was raised and educated in the George area and graduated from George High School. On May 4, 1962 she was united in marriage to Norman Smith at the Hope Reformed Church parsonage. She and her husband were residents of the George area. Janice loved helping people. She worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in George for 29 years. She also worked at the Otter Valley Country Club for a number of years where she was always waiting with a warm smile and friendly conversation. Janice loved to cook and bake. Her family will remember the wonderful treats that came from her kitchen, especially her chocolate chip cookies. Her cooking also reached into other peoples homes, as she would often bring food to her neighbors and friends in the area if they were experiencing sad or difficult times. Janices family was very dear to her. She always enjoyed times spent visiting with them and especially attending her children and grandchildrens sporting events. Around her home, Janice would often be found tending her flowers or mowing. Wanting to be closer to family, in 2009 she bought a home in Inwood where Glenda lives. As her health deteriorated she moved to Fellowship Village in Inwood in July of 2011. Janice touched the lives of many people. She quickly made many friends at the nursing home and this past Valentines Day was elected Valentines Queen. She was a special person with a big heart. This past Sunday, February 19th, Janice passed away at the age of 71. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughters, Norma (Keith) Borcherding of Manchester, IA, Carla (William) Miller of Missouri Valley, IA and Glenda (Doug) Wiltgen of Inwood, IA; grandchildren, Heather (Nick) Berning and their two children Ben and Rylee of Iowa City, IA; Kristen Borcherding of West Des Moines, IA, Kory Borcherding of Manchester, IA, and Nathan Wiltgen of Inwood; her mother, Cornelia Van Westen of George, IA; sisters, Wanda (Bob) Sietstra of Boyden, IA and Sharon Julius of George, IA. Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; father, Evert Van Westen; Ralph and Mae Smith, her mother and father in-law.
