Little Rock, Iowa Gladys Gladdy Overton, age 64 of Little Rock, Iowa died Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley. Memorial service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, August 13, 2009 at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley, with Reverend Doug Noonkester officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until time of service at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 13th at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. Gladys A. Overton was born on April 4, 1945, in Somerset, Kentucky, the daughter of Grover and Vera Kathlene (Phelps) Pence. She grew up in Long Hollow, KY and attended school there. In 1961, she was united in marriage to Charles Justice in Indiana and they were married for one year. She then married Merrell Hargis in Somerset, KY and they where married for eleven years. Following her second marriage she was married to Lyndell Ray Overton until his death in 1996. Gladys worked in a General Store/Post Office for a time, then as a metal plating instructor for a company that made bombs during Vietnam. Her latest employment was as an LPN at the Kentucky State Mental Institution. She was a member of the Lilly Baptist Church in White Lilly, KY. Gladys enjoyed gardening, crocheting, bird watching, needle point, quilting and watching golf and Kentucky basketball on TV. Despite her small stature she was a very strong woman. To know Gladys was to love her. She had a great passion for life, family and mother nature. Gladys is survived by four children: Carl William (wife, Demaris) Justice of La Grange, KY, Tonya Ellen (husband, Len) Arends of Little Rock, IA, Ellis Lee (wife, Valerie) Hargis of Sibley, IA and Gary Lyn (wife, Alexandra) Overton of Beverly, MA; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Wanda Smith of Jeffersonville, IN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover Pence and Vera Kathlene Phelps; and one sister, Marilyn June Phelps.
