Larchwood, IA John Flier age 83 of Larchwood, IA died Tuesday, September 21, 2010, unexpectedly near Harris, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, September 24th at the United Church of Christ in Larchwood, IA, with Pastor Kelly Volk officiating. Burial will follow at Larchwood Cemetery with full military honors by the Flessner American Legion Post No. 561 of Larchwood. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 23rd from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Larchwood. John Arthur Flier was born January 23, 1927 on a farm near Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Henry and Grace (Rook) Flier. At age two their family moved to a farm east of Larchwood, IA and John attended country school and helped with the family farm. On April 16, 1952 John entered the United States Army. While on leave John was united in marriage to Joanne Logan at her parents home in Rock Rapids. John earned the rank of Corporal while serving with the 40th Infantry Division. On January 15, 1954 John received his honorable discharge and returned home to Joanne. They farmed northwest of Luverne, MN until moving to their family farm east of Larchwood. In 2005 John and Joanne moved to their home in Larchwood. John was a life member of the VFW and American Legion in Larchwood. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and polka dancing. John and Joanne volunteered for several years with the setting up of the Polka Festival in Lake Benton, MN. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joanne Flier of Larchwood, IA; son, Joel (Beth) Flier of Brandon, SD; daughter, Jolene (Doug) Penning of Beaver Creek, MN; five grandchildren, Amber (Nick) Kellenberger of Lester, IA, Bruce (Natasha) Flier of Harrisburg, SD, Kara Flier of Brandon, SD, Jessica Penning of Marshall, MN, and Cody Penning of Beaver Creek, MN; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carrie Lens of Zeeland, MI and Alice Vander Brink of Boyden, IA; step-sister, Edna Garrison of Rock Rapids, IA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.
