Gladys A. Vogel, age 91 of Rock Rapids, IA died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, with Reverend Mark Hanson officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 31st from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA. In lieu of flowers, family wishes memorials be directed to Village Northwest in Sheldon, IA. Gladys Alvina Vogel was born October 13, 1920 in Kingsbury County, South Dakota to Edwin and Lena (Appledorn) Wienk. She grew up in the area and graduated from High School in Lake Preston, South Dakota. Before marriage Gladys graduated from cosmetology school in California and became a beautician. It was there in California that she met and fell in love with her husband Lewis. They were joined in marriage on October 17, 1942. Lewis had been working for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, California. Due to the failing health of Lewis parents, he and Gladys made their way back to Rock Rapids in 1944 to take over the family farm. They remained on the farm, which is just three miles northwest of Rock Rapids, to work and raise their family until 2008, when Gladys and Lewis moved to Rock Rapids. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids as well as a member of the ladies circle Daughters of Peace. She also took part for 20 years, along with her son Roger, with the 4-H group, Project Pioneer. Gladys also enjoyed gardening and sewing. This past Saturday, July 28th Gladys passed away at the Lyon Manor Nursing Home in Rock Rapids at the age of 91. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Lewis Vogel of Rock Rapids; son, Alan (Mary Anne) Vogel of Sutherland, IA; daughter, Linda (Tony) Brinkhous of Doon, IA; son, Roger Vogel of Sheldon, IA; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Lester (Betty) Wienk of Lake Preston, SD; sister, Helen (Delbert) Bjordahl of Rapids City, SD; sister-in-law, Mary Wienk; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Lena Wienk; and grandson, Craig Vogel; siblings, Kenneth Wienk, Mildred Calmer, Don Wienk, Lucille Larson, and Robert Wienk.
