Mary Pat Van Den Plas, age 88, of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, November 2, 2009 at Lyon Manor Nursing home in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 6th, 2009 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, IA with Pastor Bryan Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Thursday, November 5th from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA. Mary Magdalene Van Denplas, or Pat as she preferred to be called, was born August 24, 1921 to John and Marguerite (Isbell) Sullard of Richmond, MO. She attended school there briefly until the family moved to Kansas City, MO where she completed high school. In 1947 Pat and her young daughter, Margy, from an earlier marriage, moved to Denver where she met and ultimately married Warren Van Denplas in 1949. They lived in various states during their long marriage ending up in Rock Rapids where they moved in order to care for Vans elderly parents. Pat and her husband Van were active church members throughout their married life. Pat taught Sunday school, headed the Acteens Program, directed the Missionary Society, was the secretary for United Christian Action, and initiated a 24 hour prayer ministry. Along with Van she assisted in a prison ministry, a juvenile shelter program and carried out a ministry in the juvenile detention center. She became a resident of Lyon Manor in 1999 and resided there until she went home to be with the Lord. She is survived by her husband, Warren Van Denplas, to whom she was married for 60 years. Her daughter, Margy Hanna and son-in-law David Hanna of Oceanside, CA; three grandchildren, Steven, Lisa and Amy; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Roxiena Cook and various nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Betty Nelson, Jenny Ashcraft; and brother, John Bud Sullard. In lieu of flowers, Pat's family would like to request memorials be directed to the Alzheimers Association.
