Arthur E. Leuthold

Arthur E. Leuthold, age 92 of Rock Rapids, IA, died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at the Rock Rapids Health Care Centre. Services will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Lester, IA. Burial will take place in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Lester, IA. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday December 17, 2010, with family present at the Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall in Lester, IA. Arthur Eugene Leuthold was born August 27, 1918 in Forrest, IL to Silas and Mary (Metz) Leuthold. Between 1922 and 1927 he and his family lived near Hurley, South Dakota. His family then moved back to the Peoria, IL area where he lived on various farms and continued his schooling. Art helped his father farm and ran a corn sheller for several years. On June 21, 1941 he was united in marriage to Emily Schaer in Washington, IL. The young couple continued to farm in Illinois and began their family there. In the spring of 1949 Art, Emily and sons James and Charles moved to what became the family farm near Ellsworth, MN. In 1953, Art became a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. Art and Emily raised their family and continued to work that farm until their retirement in 1980. Being a farmer through and through, he continued to help his boys farm for several years beyond his retirement. In 1984, he and Emily moved to Rock Rapids. In September of 2001, the couple moved to Premier Estates. In April of 2008 Emily died, ending their marriage of 66 years. Art continued to live at Premier Estates until August of 2010, when he moved to the Rock Rapids Health Centre. He died there this past Tuesday at the age of 92. Art loved farming. Even after his retirement from the farming operation he and Emily had started many years before, he would spend hours mowing and gardening. But mostly, Art loved his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren will hold fond memories of sitting with their grandpa as he read to them. He very much looked forward to family get-togethers and visiting. They will hold many happy memories of him, especially his short sayings which were words of wisdom that he was so fond of using. Arthur is survived by his children, sons, James (Betty) Leuthold of Magnolia, MN, Charles (Vicki) Leuthold of Ellsworth, MN, Carl (Deb) Leuthold of Ellsworth, MN, daughters, Mary (Jerry) Ter Wee of Larchwood, IA, Carol (Bob) Molitor of Rock Rapids, IA, Martha (Jerry) Kracht of Rock Rapids, IA, sons, Douglas (Charlene) Leuthold of Ellsworth, MN and Kenneth (ReNae) Leuthold of Ellsworth, MN; 31 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Knapp of Roanoke, IL, Marie Menold of Princeville, IL, and Laura Leuthold of Melbourne, FL; sisters-in-law, Shirley Leuthold of Peoria, IL, Martha Feucht of Rock Rapids, Dorothy Schaer of Chilicothe, IL, and Wanda Schluetter of Cornell, IL; and many nieces and nephews and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Mary Metz Leuthold; his wife, Emily Leuthold; daughter, Barbara Jean Leuthold; granddaughter, Michelle Marie Leuthold; sisters, Evelyn Stickling, Vivian Leuthold, and Martha Kieser; and brother, John Leuthold.
