William Glenn Mitchell

Sibley, IA William Glenn Mitchell, age 95 of Sibley, IA, died Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the Country View Manor in Sibley. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 19th 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley with Rev. Terry Simm officiating. Burial will follow at the Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley. Visitation will be Friday, December 18th from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. William Glenn Mitchell was born on March 16, 1914, in Weston, Illinois, the son of Carl E. and Wanda (Spiegel) Mitchell. Within a few years, Carl Mitchell relocated his family to Northwest Iowa. Glenn received his elementary education from the Cloverdale Independent #2 Grade School and graduated from Sibley High School in 1933. On September 1, 1935, he married his high-school sweetheart, Ella Wolff. They shared 71 years together and were blessed with two sons, Paul and Gary. Glenn worked for Coke-A-Cola Corporation in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and was a cream hauler in Sibley before being drafted into the United States Army. He was in the active service for two years and was discharged as a Staff-Sergeant. When Glenn returned from the service he began his long career in farming. He farmed until the mid-1960s and for the next several years he was Manager of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Allendorf until 1977 and then Branch Manager of Sanborn Cooperative Grain in Melvin until 1990. This past Sunday, Glenn passed away at the County View Manor at the age of 95. He will be greatly missed and his ideals will be remembered by many. Glenn was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church for 18 years during eight separate terms. He sang in the church choir and male quartet. Glenn was a devoted husband and father and was known throughout the farming communities as a man of honesty and integrity and willingly shared his love for God with his family, friends, customers, neighbors and strangers alike. Glenn is survived by his son Dr. Paul and his wife Mary Mitchell of Marshfield, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, Shawn Mitchell and his wife Gina and their daughter Claire of Rochester, Minnesota and Heather and her children Hannah, Matthew and Joshua of Waunakee, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. The four great-grandchildren were very special to Glenn and Ella. He was preceded in death by his wife Ella, son Gary, one brother Edward Carl (Bud) Mitchell (Mildred) and one sister Louise (Wilbur) Harding.
