Rock Rapids, Iowa Joe Steiner, age 77 of Rock Rapids, IA died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thurs., December 17th at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rock Rapids with Fr. Jeff Schleisman as Celebrant. Visitation will be Wed., Dec. 16th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA. Also there will be 7:30 PM Vigil service at the funeral home Wednesday evening. Joseph F. Steiner was born March 4, 1932 in Grenora, North Dakota, the son of John and Celestine (Diesburg) Steiner. He was raised on his family farm near Williston, North Dakota. From 1950 to 1954 he served in the Navy on the USS Rochester as a Gunners Mate. Joe married Dorothy Ann Guptill May 5, 1953 and together they had five children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He farmed and was employed as a mechanic at Chapmans Oil Company Eagle Grove, IA, prior to purchasing Steiner Alignment in Rock Rapids, IA in 1967. After selling his shop he was employed with Hogan Construction and Farmers Elevator Company before retiring in 1994. Never one to be idle, he operated the dragline for Pettengill Concrete and Gravel until his passing. Joe enjoyed fishing and playing cards with his buddies. During his younger years Papa Joe drove the number 5 racecar at Rapid Speedway. Joe was a member on the Rock Rapids Fire Department from 1974 to 1988. He was an active member of the local VFW Chapter. His family was a very important part of his life and spent much time on the computer visiting with his brothers and sisters. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joe is survived by his wife Dorothy of Rock Rapids, IA; five children Pat Broesder and her husband Gary, Tim Steiner and his wife Karen, Dee Dee DeBoer and her husband Brent, Joe Steiner and Paul Cordell, and Janet Kruger and husband Jon; seven grandchildren, Jessica Steiner, Benjamin DeBoer, Adam DeBoer, Kaela Kruger, Karissa Kruger, Luke Broesder, and Laurence Broesder; and 4great-grandchildren; brother Vernon Steiner and wife Anita of Ft Peck Montana, MaDonna Salisbury of Crystal, MN, Veronica (Babe) Hurlbirt and husband Jack of Albuquerque, NM, John Steiner and wife Lynn of West Fargo, ND; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Celestine Steiner, his three brothers Laurence, Wendell, and Gerald.
