Rock Rapids, IA Hynie Chief Hommes, age 83 of Rock Rapids, IA died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Reverend Dan Haggar and Reverend Katie Van Veldhuizen officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 25th from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. Hynie Peter Hommes was born November 21, 1927, in Lyon County northwest of Rock Rapids, IA where one of his grandsons currently lives. Hynie was the son of Greta (Vos) and John Hommes. Hynie later moved with his family to a farm southeast of Rock Rapids. In 1937, he moved to another farm northwest of Rock Rapids. He attended country school at Highland #7. Hynie started driving truck for August Heinsma at the age of nineteen. On April 15, 1952, he was united in marriage to Greta Bouwman at the Bethel Reformed Church at Lester, IA. After he married they lived on the same farm with his parents and farmed with his father. He still continued to do some trucking for August Heinsma. In 1958, he moved to a bigger home on the same farm when his folks moved into town. He did various custom works besides farming such as custom baling and silage chopping. He also started buying and selling cattle for himself and custom livestock hauling for others. Trading cattle was Hynies passion as well as socializing with neighbors and family. In June of 2002 he and his wife moved into Rock Rapids, but he continued to do some cattle hauling and trading. He loved to travel and enjoyed fishing with family members and area friends. He served as President of the Lyon Co. Cattlemens Association at one time. He also was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. Hynie died this past Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of eighty-three. He is survived by his wife, Greta of Rock Rapids, IA; their three children, Marlene (Dale) Vande Kop of Clinton, MO; Harold Hommes of Des Moines, IA and Jerry Hommes of Rock Rapids, IA; three grandchildren, Holly (Chad) Gordon; Brant and Waylon Vande Kop; two great grandchildren, that were the apple of his eye, Annika and Addison Gordon; two sisters, JoAnn Douglas of Rock Rapids, IA and Irene Shelton of Luverne, MN. Hynies family would like to recognize and thank Brenda Vis for providing countless hours of special and loving care. Hynie was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings, John Hommes, Frances Vande Kop, Roger Hommes and Esther Vande Stouwe.
