Doon, Iowa Henry J. Ten Braak, age 85 of Doon, IA died Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 13th at First Reformed Church in Doon, IA with Rev. Don Baker, officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Doon with Military Honors by Rock River Post No. 476 American Legion. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 12th from 2 " 8 PM, with the family present from 6 " 8 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Henry John Ten Braak was born March 5, 1923 in Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Margaret (Beyer) Ten Braak. He was raised on family farm near Doon, IA and attended country school. After school he continued helping with the family farm as well as working for other area farms. On January 19, 1943 he entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on February 12, 1946. Henry returned home and was united in marriage on June 3, 1949 to Jennie Hilbrands at Hope Reformed Church in George, IA. They moved to Doon and Henry managed the Schoenemans Lumber Yard for the next 37 ½ years. Henry was a member of the First Reformed Church, active with consistory, town council, Doon School board, the Historical Board and Lyon County Revenue Board. He enjoyed gardening, fishing at Rock River, hunting pheasant and attending the Army Reunions. His family will remember Henry for his love and his devotion to his faith, family and friends. He tended to his family and friends as a gardener would tend to his garden. In May of 2008, Henry suffered a stroked and became a resident in June of 2008 at Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA. This past Saturday, August 9, 2008 Henry died at Avera-McKennan Hospital at the age of 85. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Jennie Ten Braak of Doon, IA; three daughters, Marlene Vande Berg, Ruth Ten Braak, both of Raleigh, NC and Nancy (Kevin) Naddy of Maple Grove, MN; two grandsons, John Naddy and Philip (Michelle) Vande Berg; a granddaughter, Megan Naddy; two brothers, Chris (Judy) Ten Braak of Wichita, KS and Andy (Glorianne) Rapid City, SD; three sisters, Christina Erickson of Garretson, SD, Martha Anderson of Doon, IA and Jennie (Bob) Stallman of Hartley, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Margaret Ten Braak; a brother, Richard Ten Braak; and a granddaughter, Leah Vande Berg.
