Verna Viola Haegele

Rock Rapids, Iowa Verna V. Haegele, age 93 of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, September 10, 2007 at the Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Friday, September 14th at the United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids, with Rev. Anita Bane officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Visitation will be Thursday, September 13th from 4 " 8 PM, with the family present from 6 " 8 PM at the Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Verna Viola Haegele was born February 16, 1914 on a farm in Lyon County near Rock Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of John and Nellie (Heins) Kostman. She was raised in Rock Rapids and graduated from Wilson High School in 1932. After High School, Verna worked for 22 years as a secretary at the ASCS office in Rock Rapids and in the early 1940s and 1950s was a member of the Rock Rapids Business and Professional Womens group. She was also a member of the Naomi Circle at the United Methodist Church. Verna married Will Haegele on August 19, 1959 in Spirit Lake, Iowa and the couple made their home in Rock Rapids. She and Will shared 34 wonderful years of marriage until his death in 1993. Verna was a very caring and giving person. Doing her part and blessing others was always in the front of her mind. Her family as well as members of the community will remember her as a lady of strong character and devotion. Verna gave of herself for many years caring for her mother, Nellie Heins and her mothers sisters, Mary Colberg and Carrie Meyer. When Wills health began to fail, she rarely left his side. As well as volunteering as the United Methodist Church Treasurer for over 30 years, she also enjoyed counting the money at Dinner Date, and of late, had her own desk at the Health Centre in Rock Rapids helping the activity coordinator with many tasks. Dining out with her husband and going to coffee in the mid-day with her friends were activities she especially enjoyed. Blessing people and caring for others is one of the legacies Verna will leave behind. Her family and friends meant so much to her and she had a special way of letting them know. She will be greatly missed. Verna passed away this past Monday at the Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids at the age of 93. Verna is survived by her step daughter: Linda (Haegele) and her husband Marion McCormack of Rock Rapids: nieces, Marlys (Polzine) and her husband Fred Weispfennig of Glenwood, MN, Barbara (Polzine) and her husband Dave Fegan of Rock Rapids, Karol (Kostman) and her husband David Horken of Lemars, IA, Diane (Kostman) and her husband Jerry Radermacher of Albany, GA, and nephew Roger and his wife Lee Ann Kostman of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Verna Haegele was preceded in death by husband Will: her parents John and Nellie Kostman, her infant brother Harvey Kostman, sister Leta Polzine, brother Wayne Kostman, and niece Marilyn (Polzine) Walker.
