Lewis Heeren

George, Iowa Lewis Louie Heeren, age 87 of George, IA died Sunday, August 5, 2007 at Good Samaritan Center in George. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 8th at Central Baptist Church in George, IA with Pastor Keith Vik, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2:00 " 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 " 8:00 p.m. at the Roste Funeral Home of George. Lewis Heeren was born February 5, 1920, at Carrington, ND the son of Albert and Tina (Kruger) Heeren. At the age of 3 he moved with his parents to George, IA where he received his education and graduated from George High School in 1938. Lewis played baseball and basketball during his time in school as well as worked with his father. In those days, He had an egg route from his fathers hatchery, a popcorn stand he tended downtown as well as operated a lunch wagon with his Dad. They fed many working men in the area including those who built what was then hwy 339 joining George with hwy 9. Lewis was united in marriage to Viola Harms June 4, 1942 in Dakota City, Nebraska and the couple made their home in George. Shortly after their marriage Lewis was inducted into the military and served from 1942 until 1946. During his time in the service Lewis worked with the predecessor to modern computers as a member of the IBM Records Unit. Upon his return to George after the war Lewis bought the Counsel Oaks grocery store and was in the grocery business until his retirement in 1975. Along with providing the community with groceries, Lewis will be fondly remembered as Uncle Louie the man who gave the local George news on KIWA. Along with being a member of the American Legion in George for over fifty years he was also a member of Central Baptist Church. Lewis always enjoyed visiting with friends and members of the community during coffee at the Pizza Ranch. In March of 2007 Lewis moved into the Good Samaritan Center in George where he died this past Sunday at the age of eighty-seven. He is survived by his daughter Luann Heeren of George, IA. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; and his parents, Albert and Tina (Kruger) Heeren.
